GREAT Yarmouth and its local companies have been involved in the offshore industry since it began over 45 years ago with the first discovery of gas in the Southern North Sea.

Since the 1960s, the industry has grown to become one of the dominant sectors in the local economy accounting for 400 companies employing 12,000 people. It is now turning its skills and expertise to the renewable sectors, particularly wind, to keep the energy industry moving forward and strong in Yarmouth.

Each month this page is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of companies and their employees related to the offshore energy industry. There is a strong enthusiasm to demonstrate that Yarmouth is a leader in this industry and promote the success of all of the companies.

There is a wide range of activities and careers associated with working in the offshore industry ranging from highly skilled engineers to essential office staff. Despite the reduction in the gas found in the Southern North Sea, the offshore industry still has plenty of opportunities.

Renewable energy is becoming more important in an era of climate change and depletion of fossil fuels. Yarmouth is embracing this change and is excellently positioned to harness the opportunities, particularly in the wind industry.

This is not surprising due to the prevailing winds and the experience already earned from Scroby Sands means the local companies are ideally placed to maximise potential from the recently announced wind farm off the coast which is expected to have as many as 1,000 turbines.

To help sustain and strengthen this growing offshore energy sector, there is a dedicated team across the county to promote and support existing businesses as well as attracting new investment and jobs into the area. The team is made up of local councillors and Council officers from Norfolk and Great Yarmouth Councils, as well as organisations including EEEGR, EastPort UK, 1st East, ANGLE, GYMI and enterpriseGY.
