STAFF at a Yarmouth jewellery store chased off two hammer-wielding robbers on Saturday afternoon.

The thieves, in hoods and masks, burst into the Cox and Son Jewellers' shop, in Northgate Street, and stole a selection of watches after smashing a glass cabinet with sledgehammers.

A police spokesman said: “They were then challenged by members of staff, who were able to force the two men out of the shop and one of the sledge-hammers was dropped. The offenders then got into a red and grey Rover 214 where a third male was waiting as the driver. Before they could make off, the staff were able to smash the passenger window of the car using a chair.”

The car was found abandoned a short time later at the rear of East Road, close to the cemetery grounds of St Nicholas' Church. A second sledgehammer was found in the vehicle.

No one at the shop was injured or assaulted during the robbery, which took place at about 3.20pm.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle in the Yarmouth area during that afternoon or saw the raiders after the vehicle was abandoned.
