The James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston says it is well on track to take on 50 apprentices, aged 16 to 25, by 2010 to replace staff as they leave. The apprenticeships include IT, porters, plumbing and hospitality.

With NHS Yarmouth and Waveney predicted to take on 12 apprentices, it means that the coastal region should be the main contributor to a high- profile NHS campaign to set up 240 apprenticeships in Norfolk.

Kirk Lower, the JPH's director of human resources and organisational development, said he was very pleased that the JPH's apprenticeship was seen as the exemplary model for the health service.
