SHOPPERS visitors and families can find out more about mental health at a large public event being held this week.

One in four people live with a mental health condition, and mental health accounts for a third of all illness as well as 40pc of all disability in Britain.

Health professionals felt more needed to be done to raise awareness, promote discussion and tackle some of the myths surrounding the subject.

Being held as part of World Mental Health Day, on Saturday, information stands, activities and mental health professionals are gathering for the event in Lowestoft.

Taking place at the Royal Green, next to the Lowestoft Pavillion in Marine Parade, from 11am to 3pm, the fun day features a smoothie bike, free massages and beauty treatments, face painting, treasure hunt, cooking sessions, photography collections and wish balloons.

Roger Eno is also performing as one of the live music acts, which include Six Degrees of Separation, Louie and Geoff, Number 52 buskers and Sam Brackenbury on alto sax.

Kim Arber, NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney commissioning manager for mental health and learning disabilities, said: “One in four people will have some form of mental illness during their lifetime and it's important we raise awareness of these issues through events such as this.

“We have worked together in partnership with a collection of agencies to make this day happen. All the different organisations are vital and NHS GYW, as the Primary Care Trust for the area, buy-in a variety of these services to enable people with mental health to be able to receive the appropriate support.”

A range of organisations are coming together to make the event happen, including NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney, Flagship Housing Support Team, North Lowestoft Housing Project, Stonham Homestay Floating Support, St Johns Housing Trust, Family Action, Feedback, Suffolk Family Carers, Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Foundation Trust, Waveney Community Forum and Suffolk County Council.
