ONE house's dazzling display of festive lights is so popular that it has been brought out of cold storage to raise money for charity- thanks to a children's petition.

Christmas lights on a property at Burnet road, Bradwell, had been left in their boxes last year after parts of the display had been stolen the previous year.

But now, thanks to a petition signed by local youngsters, snowmen and reindeer have illuminated the street again, all the while raising money for James Paget Palliative Care East Appeal.

Bea Bell, 42, is a courier and mother of Emma, 15, and Abigail, 7. She described how a few lights put up eight years ago at their previous home quickly snowballed into something worth thousands of pounds.

“It started off quite small originally, but my husband Andrew has added to it year by year, and this time he has bought some more lights for the conservatory roof because he thought it looked a bit plain.

“We were put off by thieves last year, but after we had the petition signed by some children from our estate asking why we weren't doing the lights we thought we would bring them out again.”

It is the second time that the Bell family have put use of their lights to a good cause, and they previously raised over 100 for the British Deaf Association thanks to donations from locals and passers-by.

“We thought that palliative care would be a nice charity to do this for because it helps people who haven't got a lot of time left and you don't hear much about their work.

“It's a very worthwhile cause and people seem to love the display so we've had a fantastic response in terms of donations this year.”
