A Gorleston man carried on claiming carer's allowance more than two years after he had ceased looking after his sick brother, Yarmouth magistrates heard on Friday.
Clinton Hudgell, 48, of Worcester Way, admitted failing to inform the Department of Work and Pensions of the change of circumstances which led to a benefit overpayment of £5,050. He was remanded on unconditional bail until August 15 for the bench to obtain a GP's report on his suitability for community service.
Christopher Bowles, mitigating, said it had started as a legitimate claim in December 2003 when Hudgell moved into his brother Christopher's flat to look after him after he came out of hospital where he had been treated for a serious viral infection. However, when he moved out about a year later he chose to ignore the fact he was still receiving benefit.
