Officers were called to the museum, on Tolhouse Street, just after 1.40pm on Saturday to help the ambulance service.

On arrival, they discovered the body of a man, aged in his 60s. It is understood the man was found in the dungeon of the museum.

Police said an investigation is ongoing and the death is thought to be non-suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Shortly after the incident, two ambulances and four police vehicles, including a forensics van, were on scene.

Staff at the nearby library said they were unable to comment.

The museum is thought to have been closed since June 5, when it posted on its Facebook page to say it would reopen on July 23 for the school summer holidays.

The Tolhouse is one of the country’s oldest prisons and is a Norfolk County Council run museum exploring Great Yarmouth’s story of crime and punishment.
