A man who faked his own kidnapping must pay £400 in compensation for wasting police time.

Robert Hilliard, 34, of Bennett Street, Downham Market, pleaded guilty to wasting police time at Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court today.

The prosecution said the events happened between January 3 and January 5 this year when police were called by his wife after she received threatening messages about him from an unknown number.

Hilliard was questioned by police following the report and signed an official statement claiming he was assaulted, causing him to black out, before being kidnapped and waking up disorientated near Downham Market.

However, after initial enquiries after his car was found abandoned, it was discovered Hilliard had gone to Great Yarmouth after suffering a breakdown.

Mr Hartley, defending for Hilliard, said his client had been ‘working all hours’ to not be at home.

Hilliard was told to pay £400 in compensation to Norfolk Police and costs of £85.
