Campaigners are preparing to take to the streets today after the borough’s only walk-in health centre saw its last patients yesterday.

The Greyfriars health centre was opened to much fanfare in 2012 at a cost of over £8million, and was seen as the future of the health service.

Less than six years later, in May this year, health bosses at NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group ended the centre’s contract, citing low attendance figures.

Campaigner Tony Crone launched a petition to save the walk-in clinic after the decision had been made.

He said: “All they are going to do is make A&E the new walk-in centre,” adding: “We are not going to go quietly. After Friday we will fight on and make sure that the people of Yarmouth have a decent health service.”

Cllr Trevor Wainwright, leader of the borough council’s Labour Group, said the decision to close Greyfriars would create a huge extra strain on the Paget’s A&E. He added: “Even at this late stage I ask the CCG to reconsider its position.”

Protesters will meet at St George’s Park at 10.45am today. Guest speakers include Norwich South MP Clive Lewis, Jo Rust from Unison and Kings Lynn Trade Council, Emma Corlett, a county councillor, and NHS campaigner and Unite’s executive member to the NHS, Frank Wood.

At 11.30am the protestors will march to the Marina Centre, before heading up Regent Road and along King Street, and part of Yarmouth Way to Greyfriars. They will rally outside Market Gates where Mr Crone will speak.
