The 43-year-old sustained minor injuries to his face and one of his hands during the incident in front of Herman Junior School in Gorleston at 5.30am yesterday.
But the robber fled in the direction of Woodfarm Lane without taking any cash
Police have issued a description of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident, who is said to be white and aged between 20 and 30 wearing a black hooded top.
