Great Yarmouth’s magnificent St Nicholas Minster is rolling out the red carpet for its first ever wedding fayre on Saturday.

Around 30 stall holders from all over Norfolk will be getting to the church on time for an 11am start and official opening by the Mayor of Great Yarmouth Colleen Walker.

The event has been organised the Friends of Great Yarmouth Minster with the aim of bringing more people into the 900 year old building, elevated to a Minster to reflect its growing role at the heart of the community.

And all being well they hope to display a clutch of smart motors inside the church - mingling choral voices and posh vehicles as never before.

Secretary to the Friends Marisa England-Hunt said she was delighted with the range of exhibitors spanning large venues to gowns, menswear, stationers, balloons, chocolate fountain, cars and much more.

On the day the Minster, already a perfect venue with a “celebratory” feel, will also host a full programme of music and entertainment from a harpist, magician, pianist, vocal cabaret, and handbell ringers.

Sunshine on the day would complete the line-up said Mrs England-Hunt.

“The idea really is to get people into this beautiful church,” she said. “I cannot believe they have never done a wedding fayre here before. There is going to be something on all day and, although it has been hard work, we are all just really looking forward to it. You get to a point when you have done as much as you can and all there is left to do is enjoy it.

“The surroundings are very celebratory. I know there are other wedding exhibitions going around but if this is successful we hope to make it every year.”

Priceless Brides will be staging an fashion show. Entry is free and the first 20 couples will receive a free glass of bubbly. There is also a prize draw and cafe selling refreshments and cakes. The event runs from 11-4pm.

The Friends is a non-profit, non-fundraising group that aims to bring more people into the Minster, create a community around the church, and a social environment for the Friends themselves with events and trips out.
