A CHARITY which advises on debt management and benefits for the disabled is holding an open day today between noon and 2pm at it's George Street office.

DIAL (Disability Information and Advice Line) Great Yarmouth wants to showcase its new premises and the expansion and progression of its services. There will also be a short address by Yarmouth MP Tony Wright.

Organiser Sue Taylor said: “There will be an opportunity to talk with trustees, volunteers and staff about the full range of advice and information DIAL provides to disabled people and carers within the borough. There will also be a chance to see the Lisson Grove benefit check program in use, chat to our newly appointed money and debt caseworker Stephen Bower and visit our newly refurbished charity shop.”

Former bank manager Mr Bower said: “We are now seeing two or three people each day specifically about major debt problems. One person who came to see me had 30,000 worth of credit card debt. We attempt to take the worry out of the problem by speaking to the lenders concerned. Some are more helpful than others. But on the whole, if someone has run up an enormous debt, generally speaking, the credit card company will be patient. But my advice is, if anyone finds their spending is spiralling out of control, they should speak to us as soon as possible.”

He added: “We are working with other agencies in the borough including the CAB. We all interface and help each other.”
