Some 6000 people, 1000 more than expected, packed onto the sands to play their part in the new Danny Boyle film, provisionally titled Jack and Ellie.

Audience members, most of whom had won free tickets through an online ballot, gathered from around 11am bringing picnic blankets and chairs.

With coloured flags fluttering on the beach and music playing there was no need for camera trickery to create a sun-drenched paradise.

For most it was a day to enjoy the stunning location and be part of the cheering crowd.

Their role was to welcome their favourite pop idol singer Jack Malik (actor Himesh Patel) to his rooftop performance spot at Gorleston’s Pier Hotel with an approving roar and applause.

A helicopter cruised overhead capturing the action while director Danny Boyle praised everyone for their patience and enthusiasm telling the crowd after every take that he was “speechless” and they were “amazing.”

Before filming started the Oscar winning director said: “This is amazing for Gorleston and you look beautiful today on this wonderful beach.”

He said it was the biggest casting crowd every gathered in the UK and said after one of the shots: “That was an amazing take everyone. I cannot tell you how incredible it was.”

Most people said it was an incredible, unforgettable day that was well-organised with everyone receiving a free burger and ice-cream.

Just under 4,000 used the park and ride service meaning the area by the beach avoided traffic problems.
