IN the words of the old saying if at first you don't succeed try, try again - and persistence has paid off for a grandmother who has conquered her longstanding weight problem.

IN the words of the old saying if at first you don't succeed try, try again - and persistence has paid off for a grandmother who has conquered her longstanding weight problem.

Caister pensioner Nancy Smethurst is enjoying a whole new lease of life having shed the pounds in the last few months.

The 79 year old is enjoying the benefits of her successful diet going to the gym and spending more time gardening.

Since joining Caister WeightWatchers back in April, Nancy has lost two and a half stone and is now a svelte size 14.

She was inspired to slim down by daughter Elaine who attended a WeightWatchers club in London.

Scotswoman Nancy, who swears by having a bowl of porridge every morning, said: “Most of my previous diets have only been a success for a short while. I hadn't been on a diet for three or four years, but seeing what Elaine had achieved inspired me to try again.

“This time it has been much easier thanks to all the support I have been getting from the group.

“I have never had such a good time since losing weight, feel so much better in myself and have much more energy. Before I would always have a cake or biscuit with my cup of tea, but now my kitchen is just full of fruit and vegetables.

“People kept asking what was happening to me when I was losing weight, they could not believe the transformation.

“Elaine is extremely proud of me and it so much more fun playing with my grandson Joe.”

Nancy's success has encouraged several of her friends and a neighbour to join the WeightWatchers club run by Bridget Willets.

A former civil servant, Nancy moved to Caister 14 years ago with her late husband Gordon. The couple lived in London during their working lives and retired to Caister, close to where they had a holiday home at Scratby for many years.

Bridget said: “Nancy is one of those people who are always happy, she is a lovely lady and a joy to have at meetings.

“It can be harder to lose weight for people who are more advanced in years. The secret of success is sticking like glue to the plan and not cutting corners.”
