When Sandra Goldsmith and her partner Ian - the publicans at Never Turn Back in Caister-on-Sea - decided their beach-side pub sign warranted a fresh look, they enlisted the help of Kate Enters, an old friend.

Ms Enters graduated Norwich School of Art in 2000 and has since become a successful contemporary renaissance painter. She also founded ArtCan, a company giving artists a platform to exhibit their work without replying on formal galleries settings.

One of Ms Enters’ longest-held interests has been to design her own pub sign, an ancient craft that was once a habitual activity among artists.

“Designing a pub sign is something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “I like my work to be part of a community and what better place than a pub.

“One of the historical things I’ve always really loved is the fact that artists used to go round the country and paint pub signs in return for food and board.

“Fortunately I stayed in touch with Sandra, an old manager of mine from when I was working in London, and she provided me with the perfect opportunity.”

The pub was named as a tribute to the crew of the Beauchamp, who perished in 1901 while trying to save a fishing vessel in stormy weather. At the subsequent inquest, assistant coxswain James Haylett famously said “Caister men never turn back”.

Its new sign, hanging in prime position for beach walkers to see, was unveiled on Saturday, May 19, and has been inspired by the seals that greet visitors to the coast.

The design is also reminiscent of old travel posters that used to advertise British seaside visits on trains and in travel agents.

Ms Goldsmith, who began running the pub in 2011, expressed her delight at the nostalgic design that brings a breath of fresh of air to a pub that recently gained listed status.

She said: “We’re very happy with the sign as it was a bit scary before; it was a bit dark and it squeaked a lot!

“It needed to be done so it’s great for us and has come at the perfect time as well because it coincides with us recently being listed.”
