DRIVERS are being warned to think before they drink as Norfolk Police launches its annual drink and drug driving summer campaign.

“Stop, Think, Don't Drink” runs from Sunday until June 30.

The campaign aims to reduce the number and severity of casualties caused by road crashes by educating drivers about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

PC Michael Edney, casualty reduction officer, said: “At this time of the year, the temptation to drink and drive is even greater, but the message is very simple, don't. The only guaranteed way to stay safe is to not drink at all. Ignoring this advice not only risks your life, but the lives of other innocent road users and make no mistake, the penalties for flouting this is severe.

“It's also important to remember that after a night of drinking alcohol you may still be over the limit the following morning.”

For the first week of the campaign Norfolk Police will be joining together with other UK forces and TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network.

If convicted of drink driving you could go to prison for up to 10 years, be banned from driving, face a hefty fine and a rise in insurance costs, lose your job and home.

People can report anybody they suspect of drink driving to the police by calling 0800 835835 or they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
