A new system of dealing with inquests in Norfolk is to be launched on Thursday.

The creation of the Coroner's District for Norfolk will see Norfolk coroner William Armstrong take on the coroner service for the Great Yarmouth area.

As reported the Great Yarmouth Coroner's Office is closing as part of a restructure.

Its closure has been prompted by the retirement of main Yarmouth coroner of 35 years Keith Dowding who leaves his post on Wednesday.

The formation of the single coroner's office for the whole of the county by Norfolk County Council fits in with government plans to restructure coroners.

Norfolk's five coroner's districts were reduced to three in 2000 with the resignations of the Diss and Dereham posts and in 2007 the King's Lynn coroner retired.

From Thursday anyone from the Yarmouth area who needs to contact the Coroner's District for Norfolk should write to Norfolk Coroner, 67-75 Thorpe Road, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 1UA, call 01603 663302 or email norwich@coroner.norfolk.gov.uk
