After one year of construction, and £6.7m worth of investment, a one-mile stretch of road linking two rapidly-expanding areas of the region has opened.

The road, which links the A143 in Belton to the A12 in Gorleston, has been under construction with the backdrop of the building of new homes in the area and an expanding enterprise zone at Beacon Park.

And councillors and business owners – plus two eager residents – gathered on Friday morning to be the first to drive on the road, which is hoped will help the local economy.

Among the first to take a spin was Robert Riseborough, of Browston, who took his friend Eddie Macdonald, of Bradwell, for a ride in his 1916 Ford Model T Roadster.

Mr Riseborough welcomed the new route, saying it would improve journeys to and from his home.

Cutting the ribbon alongside Great Yarmouth MP Brandon Lewis and county councillor Colleen Walker was leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Graham Plant.

He said: 'This is an event of high significance for the borough and the region, making it best placed for future investment.'

In addition to cutting congestion, the route opens up farmland immediately to the north and south to be developed with 850 homes, a primary school, shops, open space and further business space.

The funding of the road used £4.7m of government local pinch-point funding. Of the remaining cost, Persimmon Homes has contributed just over £1.4m and the borough council has covered just over £580,000.
