New and old patients in Great Yarmouth were given their first glimpse of a �2m medical centre as it opened its doors for the first time yesterday.
The spacious and bright surrounds of the Nelson Medical Centre on Pasteur Road have replaced the practice's previous site of a portable building in Churchill Road.
Its opening saw a steady flow of new patients visit the building next to the resource centre with patients from the old practice giving a seal of approval to the new state-of-the-art health facilities.
As well as housing five GPs and three practice nurses, the new energy efficient site has a minor operation room, a meeting room and rooms for district nurses for wound and ulcer care.
It is also hoped that a continence clinic and mid-wife services can be based at the NHS Yarmouth and Waveney funded practice.
Patient of four years Cliff Cotgrove, 72, was impressed by what he had seen of the new look centre.
He said: “It is marvellous that the NHS can afford to spend the money on such a lovely facility which is a nicer place for staff to work in and patients to visit.”
The old Nelson Medical Centre closed its doors on noon on Friday with staff spending the weekend making sure their new building had a clean bill of health for its first day.
Practice manager Lindsey Smith said: “We have had a lot of new patients through our doors today. This new centre has been eagerly anticipated for quite some time.
“You can see the new centre is much brighter and has more room than the old practice and our staff are already enjoying working here.”
The chairman of NHS Yarmouth and Waveney David Edwards OBE said: “This project has been a huge success running both on time and to budget.
“We are delighted to have been able to provide the money for this fantastic new facility for patients and staff alike.”
