First Buses will not be running any Boxing Day services - despite it being traditionally a busy shopping day, and this year a Saturday.

The company revealed their service details for Christmas and New Year on their website, which includes no services on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day.

A First spokesman, said: “We have not run our services on Boxing Day for the last seven years as before then the numbers which used the buses on that day was extremely low.”

However, Town Centre manager Jonathan Newman is disappointed with the decision. He said: “It is a day where most of the shops will be open and it is traditionally a very busy day for retailers, especially when it falls on a Saturday.

“Typically Boxing Day is bigger than New Year’s Day so retailers would be hit hard if there are no buses.

“Of course another problem is this will fall straight into the hands of online retailers because if people can’t get to the shops then they will just turn their computers on.”

First has also announced improvements to their X1 service between Great Yarmouth and Norwich from Monday, with a bus every 15 minutes during the day from Monday to Saturday.
