Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service tackled a spate of fires in the open last night.

The largest, in North Walsham, involved 16 bales of straw on North Walsham Road, and took from 9.50pm to 1.20am to put out.

Dereham saw two fires within minutes on Norwich Road just after 2am, one fire in a bin and one For Sale sign that had been set fire to.

Other incidents included an out of control bonfire on Carr Lane in Roughton just after 11pm and on Suffolk Road in Southtown at around 10pm, as well as a field fire in Horsham St Faith at 10.45pm on Church Lane.

In Wymondham a grass fire was reported at 7.40pm at Petty Spurge Square.

Earlier in the evening there were grass fires in Hemsby, Gaywood, and Mousehold Heath, where a fire up a tree was also extinguished by fire fighters.

David Ashworth, Norfolk’s chief fire officer, said it had been a challenging time for firefighters, but that they would “keep going”.
