A Norfolk animal charity mounted a rescue mission after a pet owner’s two rabbits had bunnies… and bunnies… and bunnies.

The owner’s un-neutered rabbits which did what came naturally and before she knew it, it was out of control and she was over-run.

Faith Animal Rescue, based at Hickling, took away three litters – a total of 20 rabbit offspring and issued a warning that they must be neutered if they don’t want to breed them.

The extra rabbits have meant Faith has had to turn one of its kennel blocks into temporary rabbit housing.

A spokesman said: “It’s very difficult for rescues to re-home rabbits, as people expect to be able to take one and stick it in a 3ft hutch for its whole life.

“Rabbits thrive best with a friend. We get so many calls about depressed, lonely bunnies who have spent their life in a hutch and only have human interaction at their weekly hutch clean (awful) – so it is no surprise they’re miserable!

“People are still very uneducated when it comes to keeping rabbits as pets, and they also don’t realise just how amazing they can be. They have just as much personality and loyalty as cats and dogs if given the chance and have the time spent with them.”

The charity stress that rabbits are high maintenance and are definitely not a pet for children as “they can’t understand why it’s not okay to grab and pull a cute fluffy thing.”

The spokeswoman added: “They are incredible pets though; they can be funny, sweet, loving, grumpy, cheeky etc and are also incredibly cute. They do the funniest things, like ‘binkies’, which is when they’re so happy they run and do a little jump.”
