Youngsters at a Norfolk school were yesterday spurred on to realise their dreams by Olympic heroine Sharron Davies.

The former swimmer, who won a silver medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, was the star guest of a sports festival at Flegg High School, Martham, near Yarmouth.

Speaking at the end of a question-and-answer session with pupils, she said: “It does not matter what you choose to do, whether it is sport or something else like music, it is the same motivation, application and sacrifices that are the key to success.”

She said she hoped the excitement of the 2012 London Olympics would encourage youngsters to take up all kinds of sports.

However, she warned Britain would need to continue to invest in sporting facilities to build on the success of the last Olympics.

The school's 20th sports festival is a 12-day programme of competitions and performing arts with local youngsters joined by a team of Polish students.
