AN inspirational overnight event this weekend in Caister is aiming to raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK.

And organisers hope local people will turn out to support the teams, as well as honour cancer survivors and celebrate life.

The 20-hour long Great Yarmouth Relay for Life is tomorrow and Sunday at Caister High School starting at 2pm on the Saturday.

It will bring in much needed money to help with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Since 2008, the Great Yarmouth Relay has raised a mammoth 100,000 for Cancer Research UK, and chairman of the local event, Jayne King, said the committee was keen to get the message out that the public were very welcome to go along.

She said: “There will be 20 teams taking part and they have all worked very hard raising sponsorship.

“We would love to see more members of the public at the event as it would not only boost the morale of the teams as they walk the track, but hopefully they can contribute to the fundraising at the various stalls and fundraising events that we have organised.

“There will be live entertainment on the day, as well as various games and children’s rides which will also raise money for the Relay total.”

The organisers are looking to make the 2011 Great Yarmouth Relay even bigger, with a target total of 44,000.

Teams raise money in a variety of ways from pub quizzes and car boot sales, to karaoke nights and variety shows. This year’s event sees a team from Nottingham participating, while the Great Yarmouth Road Runners will be running for the whole 20 hours of the event with one member Steve Etherington, walking nonstop for the whole event in memory of relatives lost to cancer.”

Miss King added: “It really is great fun but, with the knowledge that we are all really making a difference.”

The Relay is overnight from 2pm until 10am on Sunday at Caister High School, where the teams will walk continuously in relay.

There will be live entertainment and music throughout tomorrow, from 1.15pm until 10.30pm.
