A SKIP lorry overturned causing the closure of a Great Yarmouth street earlier today.

The truck driver was in the process of loading the skip from the former Boultons furniture store onto the back of the lorry in St Francis Way when it overturned, shedding its contents over the road and pavement next to the St John's Head pub in North Quay.

Police closed St Francis Way to traffic to allow the stricken lorry to be recovered.

Workmen are currently redeveloping the Grade II listed former Boultons store, which dates back to the 17th century, as part of a Flagship Housing scheme to provide 19 mostly one and two bedroom flats.

The skip containing waste building materials was being slid onto the lorry's trailer and was 85pc of the way on when the lorry overturned on to the driver's side at 4.30pm.

The driver was unhurt and was not in the cab at the time.
