IT was launched with an auction of prizes, including helicopter flights - and now the sky's the limit for the Palliative Care East appeal after passing the 1m fundraising total.
Delighted staff at the James Paget University Hospital thanked fundraisers who had generously donated towards the appeal to raise 1.5m for a new palliative care centre in the hospital's grounds since it was launched in October 2006. The total stands at 1,060,000.
Appeal co-ordinator Jenny Westgate said: “It won't be long before we can seethe fruits of everybody's donations. Reaching the 1m mark was a real psychological boost, but we are taking it step-by-step and remain enthusiastic and determined to reach the 1.5m target.”
Hundreds of people, including friends, neighbours, social groups, clubs and societies have chipped in to raise money for the appeal by organising fundraising events.
Many have created personal gifts in memory of a loved one, and to date the appeal has received more than 1,900 individual donations.
The latest has come from the Lowestoft Charity Board, which has given 50,000 to the appeal from its own funds.

The board is an amalgamation of several Lowestoft charities and runs 51 Lowestoft almshouses and provides help for students and the poor.
The money is from revenue gained from the board's Lowestoft Town and Estate charity wing, which rents out between 15 and 20 properties it owns in the town.
Last week, the Mercury reported how offshore firm Marathon Oil had donated 5,000 to the appeal in memory of rig worker Billy Pollard. Billy's wife Karen has given an extra 615 from family and friends in memory of her husband.
