A PICTURESQUE Norfolk Broads village is to discuss tonight whether residents should be given a say on plans to preserve the look of their community.
Opinion is divided in Stokesby about a Broads Authority scheme to designate a large part of the village as a conservation zone. Under the proposal homeowners may need to seek extra permission to knock down or extend buildings and chop down trees.
Tonight Stokesby Parish Council is to consider the democratic merits of allowing residents to have a proxy vote on the zone scheme.
Previously the council had said only residents who attended a special meeting would be able to register their vote.
But following a campaign by anti-conservation zone campaigner Trevor Barber councillors will now look at extending the ballot after he sent them a letter saying the absence of proxy voting may breach human rights.
A survey earlier in the year showed a rough 50/50 spit over the Broads Authority plan, which is designed to preserve the historic nature of Stokesby.
