A petition set up against the closure of a Great Yarmouth medical centre has attracted hundreds of signatures in just a few days.

Greyfriars Health Centre, which opened less than five years ago, is due to be axed by health bosses.

And patient Tony Crone has set up a petition he hopes will show that the community wants to keep Great Yarmouth's only walk-in-centre.

Mr Crone said he had always had excellent care in the three years he has been registered at the multi-million pound centre.

'I can ask to see the same doctor, I can phone up at 8 o'clock in the morning any day to get an appointment or you can go down to the walk in and wait to see a doctor,' he said.

'The majority of people I speak to have been really positive about the surgery, and I'm hoping the petition will show that people still want it open. I'm just hoping the powers that be will take notice.'

And Mr Crone's petition, which has attracted more than 450 signatures since being set up on Thursday evening, has caught the attention of Norfolk County Councillor Johnathon Childs, who represents East Flegg.

He said: 'We have had medicom out of hours before based at Northgate and out-of-hours doctors that attended calls, but all these systems seem to have faults. The medical centre at Greyfriars is an asset to the community.

'Remember there are 10,000 new houses going into Great Yarmouth over next few years. These new houses will have two or three residents – where will they seek medical attention? I urge people to sign the petition to fight to keep our services'

Sign the petition by searching for Save Greyfriars Health Centre on www.change.org. Mr Crone will be outside the centre on Wednesday from 8am with a paper copy to sign.
