A decision has been made to defer discussing a petition over a contentious consultation about relocating Great Yarmouth’s market.

The borough council is consulting on possible plans to move the market towards the Minster end of the Market Place area as part of an overall town centre masterplan.

It has met opposition from market traders who say they have invested a lot of time and money in their current lots, with council leaders saying nothing is set in stone.

A petition against any possible relocation gathered more than 3,000 signatures and was presented to the council by borough councillor Chris Walch.

The petition was due to discussed on Wednesday night by councillors, but they heard the petition organiser, after discussions with the council, wanted to defer the debate to a later date.

The agenda for the meeting said: “The petition has concerns that moving the market further north in the town centre will be counter productive and has asked for certain assurances.”
