About 670 people have signed a petition calling for Catfield Road, a main route from Ludham to Catfield, to be gritted every time there is cold weather.

A campaign to have the road added to the County Hall gritting list was launched last month by county councillor Paul Rice after a spate of accidents caused by poor conditions.

Mr Rice said he would now be compiling a report on the road, which is on bus routes and well used by patients going to Ludham medical practice, and presenting it with the petition to Adrian Gunson, the council's portfolio holder for planning and transportation.

Thanking local businesses for helping with the petition, he said: “This is a big issue as we have had people injured.

“How much will gritting less than one mile of road cost when you compare that to the cost of a road traffic accident which could easily come to 150,000 with the emergency services response?”

A county council spokesman said they welcomed any views and concerns on the need to grit roads and would evaluate them all.
