The police have issued travel and safety advice to the thousands of people expected to attend a huge event in the Great Yarmouth calendar.

The Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight displays are among those set to dazzle spectators at the Haven Great Yarmouth Air Show, which will take place over June 16 and 17.

A traffic management plan will be in place across the weekend and police are advising travellers to plan well ahead and allow plenty of time.

Superintendent Roger Wiltshire, local policing commander, has warned motorists to expect delays on the A47 as people head to the town.

He said: “This is a fantastic event for the town and we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

“We’re expecting the town to be extremely busy over both days which will ultimately result in delays on the A47 along with other main routes into Yarmouth as well as Gorleston.

“My advice to people attending is to plan ahead; make sure you allow plenty of time for your journey and have suitable parking arrangements in place. There are a number of road closures in the place on the seafront – including the side roads off Marine Parade – so drivers should not attempt to park in this area.”

Police have been working with the air show organisers, the Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area (GYTABIA), and local authorities in the planning of the event, and a dedicated policing operation will be in place.

Additional officers - including armed units - will be on patrol across the weekend.

Visitors are urged to make sure they keep their personal belongings with them and be sensible with regards to alcohol consumption.

Supt Wiltshire added: “We have practical and precautionary measures in place to provide reassurance and respond to every eventuality if needed.

“Do remain vigilant and if you have any concerns, please approach our officers or event stewards who will be happy to help.”
