A move to ban motorists from driving on to beaches in the Great Yarmouth area is to be discussed next week.

On Wednesday, the borough council will look at a general ban on cars going on to the beaches by introducing a permit scheme on council-run coastal sites.

As part of the car ban plans, the council's cabinet will also examine setting up a beach permit system which would allow controlled access on the region's sandy beaches.

Permits would include appropriate insurance cover, the consequences of non-compliance and a requirement that all motorists clean up after themselves.

A similar policy was rescinded two years ago after it was impossible to enforce and manage, according to cabinet papers.

The report says: “Measures restrict-ing vehicular access to the beach by the use of lockable posts have largely proved unsuccessful due to the posts or locks being vandalised.”
