A DRUGS swoop that saw six people arrested in Great Yarmouth have been hailed as a resounding success by police.

Members of South Yarmouth Safer Neighbourhood Team were supported by officers from police headquarters during the raids on the town's Barrack Estate last week.

Inspector Nick Russell said: “It has been a very positive with a serious impact into drug dealing achieved with the help from the community.

“The engagement and feed back from the public has been tremendous, this will enable us to deliver a plan and resources to address community problems.

“High profile policing, including senior officers from Wymondham, saw the lowest recorded crime for the year with only four crimes recorded over a 24 hr period.”

Police believe the arrests will cause significant disruption to the drugs dealing in the area and send out a clear message that the Safer Neighbourhood Team and the community are working together to tackle the problem.

Following the arrests, PCSOs distributed letters and a questionnaire to residents of the estate asking them to raise problems, which led to more than 100 responses.

Concerns included problems with children, quality of life issues, fly tipping, untaxed vehicles and drug abuse.

A partnership with the Police, borough council and VOSA has seen the seizure and destruction of untaxed, uninsured vehicles in recent weeks.

Children Services who visited schools in the area to find which pupils were absent.

This was followed up by a home visit to check on their welfare and why they were away from school.

Officers from Trading Standards and Custom and Excise visited licensed premises to check the quality and type of alcohol being sold.
