Police will today continue their search for a red BMW which the man was a passenger in, and failed to stop at the scene.

Officers said that a red BMW 1 series was travelling on the A149 at Stalham in the direction of North Walsham from Great Yarmouth at about 8am on Tuesday, September 11, when a man was seen to leave the moving vehicle, from the passenger side.

He fell on the road near to Richardson’s Boatyards and rolled towards the edge of the carriageway.

Members of the public came to his aid until the East of England Ambulance Service arrived.

The man was then taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries, where he remained in a critical condition last night.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of an incident in Stalham at 7.59am.

“Two ambulances were sent to the scene to treat a man, who was taken to hospital for further treatment in a serious condition.”

The road has a 50mph speed limit and there are narrow grass verges on the side.

It is not known what speed the car was travelling at.

Michael Bean, who works in sales at CT Baker builders merchant, just off the A149 on The Staithe, said he saw emergency services rushing to the scene of the incident.

He said: “I saw the blue flashing lights from the emergency services.

“A customer came in and said there had been some kind of accident on A149, but I did not go out there to see.”

Some of the staff at Richardson’s were having a smoking break when it happened.

A staff member, who did not wish to be named, said they saw somebody in the aftermath of the incident.

The staff member said: “I did not see what happened but was told by a colleague that a man covered in blood was lying by the side of the A149.”

Officers are keen to trace two men who stopped at the scene to help with the man’s injuries.

Anyone with information should contact Great Yarmouth CID on 101.
