Five cars have been seized since the middle of September by officers from South Yarmouth Safer Neighbourhood Team conducting checks in Regent Street.
The checks followed complaints from other motorists and members of the public that drivers were disobeying the signs and using the road as a short cut to the quay.
In the majority of cases details of the drivers were recorded and verbal warnings were issued that in future, disregard of the signs will result in a fixed penalty ticket.
A police spokesman said: “Of those that were stopped, five cars have been seized where the vehicle was found to be uninsured, untaxed and not having a current MOT certificate. In these cases as well as having the vehicle seized and having to pay for the recovery costs, the driver has been issued with a £60 fixed penalty ticket or reported with the prospect of a court appearance. Other offences detected included not wearing a seat belt and defective tyres.”
He added that one driver was arrested and the car seized when it was found he was driving without insurance, driving licence and had taken the vehicle without the consent of the owner. He was later due to appear before Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court.

The police say that attention will continue to be paid to this area and “appropriate action” will be taken against those who disregard the traffic signs.
