Pond warning after close shave in Acle

POLICE are warning people of the dangers of venturing onto frozen lakes and ponds as the cold spell is set to continue.

The timely warning follows an incident on Monday after police received a call from a concerned member of public reporting a group of children using a lake in Little Plumstead as an ice rink.

The Acle Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) attended and gave strong words of advice to the five young boys about the risks they were putting themselves in.

Police Community Support Officer Paul McAllister said: “People should never assume that any frozen water is strong enough to hold their own weight, the ice may be thick in some place and really thin in other areas.

“If the ice gives way there is no telling how deep the water is and also how cold the water temperature is; our advice is to never venture on to frozen water”.

If anyone member of the public witnesses similar situations please contact the police, in an emergency call 999 in a non emergency call 0845 456 4567.
