VITAL points may not be at stake, but there will be local pride to play for as Norwich City take on Ipswich Town at Great Yarmouth football club.

Some of the great names to have graced the East Anglian derby in recent years are set to appear at Wellesley Road next April.

The match between the Canaries and Blues stars has been organised by former city star Dale Gordon's Legends Events.

It is set to be another memorable occasion at the Wellesley following last season's Norwich and Yarmouth legends match.

That game attracted a bumper crowd and Gordon is hoping the ground will be packed to the rafters to see some top players from the past turn out once again.

He said: “It is an ideal opportunity to stage the match with there not being an East Anglian derby this year.

“It will also be the 25th anniversary of Norwich winning the Milk Cup, when of course they beat Ipswich in the semi-final.

“It was always my aim to organise matches like this at the club and it should be a great day.”

Players set to turn out for the Canaries include Darren Huckerby, Dion Dublin, Iwan Roberts and Bryan Gunn.

Ex-city boss Ken Brown will be taking charge of the Canaries team with former town defender Kevin Beattie managing the Blues.

Town legends lined up include John Wark, Matt Holland, Jason Dozell, Russell Osman and Simon Milton.

Gunn and Milton joined Gordon to attend a launch event for the game on Monday at the Wellesley.

The Yarmouth match on Sunday, April 18 will be followed by a return fixture in Suffolk in August. A special cup will be presented to the winning side over two the two ties.

It will be the first of what is hoped to be a regular match between the teams' former stars.

Goalkeeping legend Gunn has mixed memories of derby matches down the years.

He said: “There was that fateful day when the ball bobbled over my boot and into the net.

“It was typical of those games with something dramatic or controversial always seeming to happen.

“On one occasion the referee awarded Ipswich a penalty and then changed his mind after the linesman flagged for offside.

“The game is an opportunity for fans to come along and show their support, hopefully we can put on a good show and may the best team win.”

Former Town midfielder Milton also experienced his share of the derby day highs and lows.

He said: “My first match against Norwich was in the Simod Cup - I came on and scored the winner in extra time.

“At the time I was living between Ipswich and Norwich so really experienced the rivalry between the fans first hand.

“Norwich and Ipswich matches are definitely up there with any other derby, but it's basically a friendly rivalry.”

Tickets for the match, 10 adults, 5 under 16s, are available from Simpsons Skoda Suffolk Road; Pub on the Prom; David Mobbs Sports, Regent Street and Legends Lounge Bar on 07545034375.
