Probe continues into man’s death in fire at Breydon Water Caravan Park

Emergency services were called just after 3am yesterday morning to reports of a fire in a caravan at Breydon Water Caravan Park in Burgh Castle.

Officers from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service found a man inside the caravan who was then taken to the James Paget Hospital for treatment – but he died this afternoon.

Detective Inspector Richard Graveling said: 'The investigation into the man's death is in its early stages; however, it is currently being treated as unexplained and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

'It is unclear at this stage as to how the fire started. A seal is in place at the scene of the fire and specialist forensic officers are due to attend tomorrow (Monday) to establish the cause of the fire.'

Three fire crews from Gorleston and Great Yarmouth used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

An ambulance, rapid response vehicle and an ambulance officer also attended.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said the man had initially been taken to hospital after suffering 'extensive burns'.

An eyewitness, who was staying close to the static caravan, where the incident took place, said:

'At 3am we were woken by a loud explosion and smoke pouring from a caravan.

'As we waited for the fire service to arrive it was horrendous as no-one knew who, or how many people, were inside.

'Generally everyone stayed calm – it is just one of those tragic things that has happened.

'The staff on site have been fantastic, they could not have been better.'
