A PROLIFIC burglar was jailed for 24 weeks yesterday after he broke into one of Great Yarmouth's flagship stores.

Jamie Kavanagh forced his way into Palmers department store by smashing a back window on Tuesday night and ransacking an office.

After failing to steal anything, the 36-year-old was caught by police as he kicked open a back door in the Market Place building to make his escape after an alarm activated.

Yesterday Kavanagh, of Marine Parade, was sent to prison for 24 weeks by Yarmouth Magistrates' Court after he admitted his latest burglary.

He had at least 35 previous convictions for burglaries.

Describing the Palmers incident, Gary Starling, prosecuting, said: “The office had been subject to an untidy search. A lot of things had been removed and strewn across the floor.”

The court heard that Kavanagh suffered from a bipolar disorder. At the time of Tuesday's burglary, he was not taking his medication and had been drinking alcohol and taking amphetamines.

Annette Hall, in mitigation, said: “As a direct result of that he lapsed to his old behaviour.

“He is very unwell at the moment. He can't help it,” she said.
