EVIDENCE is emerging that a series of mysterious underground bunkers found in a Norfolk forest may be part of a top secret second world war resistance base.

It follows the discovery of an extensive bunker system in Waveney Forest, at Fritton, near Yarmouth.

Local residents firmly believe the network of 18 cramped holes was used by specially trained members of the Home Guard as a base to carry out sabotage operations against any German invaders.

Keith Nunn, chairman of Fritton Parish Council, has been contacted by about half-a-dozen people who say they had evidence the bunkers were used by the so-called Dad's Army commandos.

Part of the evidence includes an obituary of a former Home Guard member who was based in the forest.

The parish council is collating all the information so it can be used in dossier to persuade English Heritage to preserve the historic site.

It is hoped that if the bunkers are preserved it will shoot down potential plans to turn the woods into a quarry.

Mr Nunn, whose uncle served in the forest with the Home Guard, said: “So far about six or seven people have come forward to corroborate what we think and provide some follow ups.

“There are still other chambers out there and we are hoping to find them.”

To help provide further concrete proof that the bunkers are from the Home Guard, the man who discovered them Richard Warner is to visit Suffolk.

By touring the Museum of the British Resistance Organisation at Parham airfield, near Framlingham, Mr Warner hopes to find further evidence of the role of Waveney Forest as a secret arms dump.

English Heritage says it had never seen a network of bunkers like it before and describes the find as a tremendous historical importance.

The forest is one of 94 possible sties on a Norfolk County Council list of landowners and developers who have applied to create quarries to help provide building materials for the region from 2016.
