Lynn Grove High pupils are working on the community garden with the help from a number of local businesses.

Aimed at helping make Lynn Grove a green school, the project is being supervised by Nettie Bowles.

Assistant head Sandra Govender said: “This project is the first of its kind in the area and epitomises what community cohesion is all about.”

Keeping in theme with the BBC TV show Ground Force, master composter David Nettleship has worked with the pupils to develop an empty space on the school grounds into a garden.

ASCO under the leadership of operations manager Barbara Aldous agreed to fund the building of the garden and appointed materials co-ordinator Bob Carr to manage the project.

After a number of calls, meetings and requests for resources, Bob secured the materials for building the garden.

After weeks of hard, work, often in freezing temperatures, the basic structure is now complete and boasts two beds for wheelchair users, a herb bed, an area to grow fruit trees, a four bed crop rotation area and an area for a sensory/cultural garden.

The garden also has composting bins, a wormery and water butts, making it self sustaining in the spring and summer months. Planting will begin in the spring after the official opening ceremony in March.

The staff and pupils of Lynn Grove and Barbara and Bob of ASCO would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions. These include: Plumbase, Ready Mix, Jacksons, Carl Dobson, B&Q, Manning's Halls, Rushmeres, Early Dawn Garden Centre, C & C Sheds, Lound Plant Centre, Mayhill's Nurseries, Hillfield Nursery, Discount Paving and Landscaping, Speedy Hire and Enviroco.

Future plans for the garden include constructing a sculpture from recycled materials and wildlife garden.
