Residents are being urged to make their voices heard, as a sand quarry company looks to extend its current stay in a local village.

Folkes Plan and Aggregates Ltd currently occupies Welcome Pit in Burgh Castle and has prepared a proposal for an extension to the site, which is due to be displayed to the public this week.

While exact details of the proposal will not be revealed until the consultation, the village’s parish council is urging the public to have their say.

Trevor Greenacre, chairman of Burgh Castle parish council, said: “As a council, we want to make sure villagers know what is going on and attending this meeting is vital to be able to do this.

“Once these plans come through we need to know what the village’s views are. In the past, people have not made their views known until after decisions have been made.”

Mr Greenacre is worried that if people do not take the opportunity to express their opinions, any decision made on the proposal will represent the village.

He said: “I do not want any backlash to come back to us if the decision made is unpopular. The opinions of the public are immensely important and need to be heard.

“At the moment I do not know too much about the proposal, so I am as in the dark as everybody else.”

Representatives from the parish council, Norfolk County Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Folkes will all be at the exhibition, where the public can view the proposal, comment on it and ask questions.

A spokesman from Folkes said: “The public exhibition will be an opportunity for local people to understand what already takes place at Welcome Pit and how the company wishes to further develop and then restore the pit in the future.”

The exhibition will be held in Burgh Castle Village Hall from 9am until 8pm on Tuesday, November 22.
