NORFOLK County Council has announced a feasibility study to look at different options for the future of the dilapidated Vauxhall Bridge, an important walkway connecting Asda and the railway station to North Quay and the town centre.
NORFOLK County Council has announced a feasibility study to look at different options for the future of the dilapidated Vauxhall Bridge, an important walkway connecting Asda and the railway station to North Quay and the town centre.
One of the options up for discussion is to demolish the bridge and replace it with a footbridge using the same structure.
As well as demolition, the other options to be considered will be: a new cycle bridge through the structure with refurbishment of the existing bridge and removal of the old cycle bridge; complete refurbishment of the bridge, potentially to allow for public transport; a new cycle bridge independent of the existing structure; and refurbishment of the existing cycle bridge with environmental improvements to the approaches.
Council officers will meet key stakeholders during their study, including officials from Sustrans, the cycleways charity which takes responsibility for the bridge on behalf of its sister charity Railway Paths, the urban regeneration company 1st East and borough council planning officers.
The cost of the alternatives will be worked out before a decision is taken on the way forward in early February.
It is hoped the chosen scheme would attract Fairshares lottery cash and could start by February 2012.
