A SPRING clean is helping give Great Yarmouth railway station a much needed make over this week.

The work has been welcomed by organisers of a campaign to improve the appearance of the 60s era train terminal.

Litter and weed picking has been carried out in and around the station criticised as “a rundown dreary shack with minimal facilities.”

It follows the introduction of new signs and a customer information screen by station operator National Express East Anglia.

Poster boards and new litter bin holders will shortly be fitted and a new recycling scheme has also been introduced to manage litter and waste collected at the station and on-trains.

The improvements have been given the thumbs up by businessman Spencer McCormack who has organised a clean up day at the station on Saturday, June 19. That will be followed the next day by a fundraising event at the Burrage Centre in Gorleston.

Health club director Mr McCormack said: “National Express have responded very positively to the campaign and are keen to work with us.

“I welcome the improvements that are being carried out - to some extent the company has not been given enough credit for what it has been doing.

“It will all help towards the efforts we are making to smarten up the station and is certainly a move in the right direction.”

Mr McCormack this week got together with local businesses interested in helping out with efforts to refurbish the station.

It is hoped that this will be followed by at a meeting where the planned ideas can be shared with the public.

National Express East Anglia Yarmouth area manager James Steward said: "We have more work planned over the coming weeks, but I am pleased with the progress that has so far been made in brightening-up the environment at Great Yarmouth station and the efforts made by the station team.

“I also continue to be encouraged by the enthusiasm of the local business people and stakeholders who are working with us on these projects.”

The family fun day includes a Father's Day carvery, raffle and music from Banned Potential featuring medical staff from the James Paget University Hospital and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Proceeds from ticket and raffle sales and 1 from every meal purchased will be donated to the campaign.

Tickets are available on 01493 452684, the Burrage Centre Facebook site or email burrage@hotmail.co.uk.
