A small mountain of unwanted household electrical items was left in Acle during the latest Broadland District Council recycling drive.

The pile of televisions, music systems and vacuum cleaners and other items left at the Recreation Centre car park on Bridewell Lane weighed more than three tonnes and filled one and a half lorries to be taken away for recycling.

It was the fourth collection event held in Broadland by the council and it means that so far nearly 20 tonnes of unwanted household electrical and electronic items has been taken away for recycling instead of ending up as landfill.

Bob Wade, environmental protection manager at the council, said Saturday's collection had seen a fantastic response from people, especially considering the cold weather.

Council portfolio holder for environmental policy John Fisher said: “Electrical equipment contains a lot of recoverable material so it is great the way residents are making the effort to help us to divert it from landfill.

“With their help we aim to recycle even more at future events.”

The next electrical and electronic equipment collection takes at Hellesdon's community centre car park on Saturday, February 13 from 9am to 1pm.

The only items that cannot be left are fridges, freezers, fluorescent tubes, commercial or industrial items and large items that cannot be lifted easily.
