They have been the cause of many an irksome journey for road users for nearly two months.
But motorists, pedestrians,residents and businesses in Oulton Broad will breathe a collective sigh of relief as roadwork diversions at a notorious traffic hotspot are set to finish tomorrow.
It comes as National Grid, which is behind major the gas work project that caused the road diversions, has announced the scheme will be completed and roads will be reopened on Wednesday, April 5 – ahead of the predicted completion date of Friday.
Since the diversion and gas works began on February 20 the resulting four diversion routes, including Bridge Road becoming a temporary one way system, has led to major disruptions for motorists, residents and business owners - with police receiving a number of complaints around road safety, the manner of driving and speed of cars on the diversion routes.
But after the disruption and unrest, relief looks set to be in sight.
A National Grid spokesman: 'Gas mains and service pipe replacement work stopped on March 31 and reinstatement and resurfacing work is currently being carried out.
'We expect that the road will be fully reopened by the morning of Wednesday, April 5.
'We would like to thank people for their patience during this essential work, which will help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.'
The scheme was carried out between the Shell service station in Normanston Drive, passing by Oulton Broad North railway station, to Oulton Broad library in Bridge Road. The essential works have been carried out to replace gas mains, nearing the end of their operational life, and to ensure people have access to safe and reliable gas supplies in the future.
