First came the Blue Flag - awarded to Britain's best beaches, then it was the Green Flag - fluttering over preeminent parks and now it is the Purple Flag.

Awarded to towns that can offer a top night out Great Yarmouth is hoping to fly one over club-land - boosting the night-time economy.

PC Teresa Middleton who was looking to organise a workshop at the seafront Atlantis Arena, said: “Purple Flag is a new, innovative and much sought after award.

“Put briefly, Purple flag covers four main areas, well being, movement, A broad appeal and place, wrapped up in a policy envelope, giving a clear aim and common purpose. It brings together all the positive aspects under one banner and can be used to promote our town and attract more visitors and revenue. It will also make people who work and live here feel better about themselves and their town.”
