RETIRED Gorleston GP Dr William Hamilton-Deane is marking reaching the age of 86 with a mammoth swimming challenge to raise funds for Papworth Hospital.

Dr Hamilton-Deane will be swimming a mile for every year of his life at Bannatyne’s in Peto Way, Lowestoft.

An experienced swimmer with several amateur titles under his belt, he will take on the challenge over the next few weeks and is currently collecting sponsorship. By swimming the equivalent of the English Channel more than four times, he is also aiming to raise awareness of the lifesaving treatment available at Papworth.

Dr Hamilton-Deane is a regular sight in the pool at Bannatyne’s and visits the health club almost every day. Swimming has been a central part of his life and, over several decades, he has competed in many competitions including the National Swimming Championships and would have competed in the 1948 London Olympic Games if it wasn’t for injury.

He said: “Swimming has been a passion of mine for so many years and I couldn’t think of a better way to try and raise money and awareness for Papworth Hospital. The staff at Bannatyne’s have been really supportive and I know they will help keep me motivated through the many miles ahead.”

Dr Sarah Clarke, consultant cardiologist and clinical director of cardiac services at Papworth, said: “I am delighted Dr Hamilton-Deane has chosen to fundraise for Papworth. Swimming is an excellent form of exercise and as his consultant it is very gratifying to see him exercising and keeping himself so fit. I wish him well.”
