RNLI awards

RNLI awards for outstanding contributions to fundraising were given to Elspeth Shipley and Jan Baines Burton at Robinson College Cambridge on June 6. Sir David Robinson, who with a group of trustees set up Robinson College, had an interest in the lifeboat service.

RNLI awards for outstanding contributions to fundraising were given to Elspeth Shipley and Jan Baines Burton at Robinson College Cambridge on June 6.

Sir David Robinson, who with a group of trustees set up Robinson College, had an interest in the lifeboat service. He provided a replacement lifeboat for the Solomon Brown, lost in the Penlee disaster and subsequently provided three more lifeboats.

The awards were presented by the Coxswain of the Aldeburgh Station Steven Saint.

Mrs Shipley was awarded a gold badge for her contribution to fundraising and her long service to the RNLI , she has been a member of the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Ladies Lifeboat Guild for over 30 years and been responsible for the collecting boxes for that time as well as taking an active part in money raising activities. She is married to Bill and she and her daughters Janet and Elspeth all worked for the lifeboat.

Mrs Jan Baines Burton was awarded a framed certificate of thanks from the Institution for her excellent fundraising and contribution to the lifeboat. Mrs Baines Burton has been a Guild member for seven years and has held three large fundraising events at her home in Fritton which have raised �30,000. Mrs Baines Burton is married to local businessman John Burton.
