A Great Yarmouth road will be reduced to one-way traffic for four weeks as £70,000 worth of improvements are made.

From November 4, Norfolk County Council and its contractors will work to improve the road and pavement on Howard Street North, resulting in a one-way restriction for three weeks from November 5 to November 25.

Traffic will again be restricted from December 3 for one week so construction can be carried out safely.

The work, costing £70,000, will involve resurfacing the road, replacing the existing kerb lines and resurfacing the pavements. There will also be new tactile paving installed at junction crossing points, designed to make the street easier to use for visually impaired people.

While the one-way restriction is in place, drivers will only be able to travel north along Howard Street North and traffic will not be able to turn into Howard Street North from The Conge.

Bus users will occasionally need to use alternative bus stops due to a temporary suspension of bus stops within the area.

Imposing a one-way closure will allow pavements and kerb lines to be reconstructed without the need for temporary traffic lights along Howard Street North.

There will, however, be temporary traffic lights at the junction with The Conge during the scheme’s early stages while work takes place at the north end of Howard Street North.

To allow replacement of the road surface, Howard Street North will be completely closed to through traffic from November 26 to November 30 from its junction with Stonecutters Way to its junction with The Conge. Access to properties will be maintained but subject to delays.

Motorists should note that time-limited restrictions on parking bays behind the police station will be lifted to allow residents of Herries Close and Fitzalan Close to park in this location if required.

The ‘no entry’ restriction from St Francis Way onto North Quay will also be lifted to allow surfacing lorries through.
